Coming Home to the Collegiate

Coming Home to the Collegiate

Arrive as guests and leave as a family

Words by Ashley Locke

You know that feeling when you meet someone for the first time, but it feels like you’ve known them for a lifetime? That’s the feeling you get when you stay at The Collegiate Hotel in Auburn—or as friends call it, CoHo.

Though the hotel itself opened in 2018, the building is familiar to the city. It’s been around since 1940 when it opened as Wittel Hall, Auburn’s first dorm for women. When Kim Wirth noticed the old building was for sale, she and her husband Brian immediately saw the potential. As Auburn Alumni, their vision for the boutique hotel included preserving its history—so the couple worked with the family of the original owners to keep the original hardwood floors, cozy fireplaces, and some of the early 20th century furniture that had been left behind. The result was a hotel that’s distinctly Auburn—combining history, tradition, and hospitality.

When you step into the historic lobby, you’ll be greeted by, “Y’all checking in?” from a friendly staff member. Visit Auburn’s first elevator, and you’ll feel like you’ve taken a trip back in time. The hotel features 40 eclectic rooms that celebrate southern art and style. Each room has a unique piece of art on display. Designed with patterned wallpaper, reclaimed wood, and cozy patios, you’ll feel right at home before you even begin to unpack.

The Bar at Wittel, located in the lobby, is the perfect spot to grab a craft cocktail and mingle with other guests—but in the evening, you’ll want to migrate up to the rooftop bar to watch the sunset over Samford Hall. The view is unmatched, making it a go-to spot for visitors, locals, and students on date-night.

It’s not just a hot date night spot—The CoHo is also marriage material. Just steps away from downtown, it’s the perfect location for your guests to gather. Two indoor and outdoor venues available for rehearsal dinners, bridesmaids luncheons, or the wedding of your dreams. Block off a section of rooms for your wedding guests, then dance the night away at a rooftop bar reception.

Auburn isn’t just a college town, it’s a destination—and The Collegiate Hotel is in the center of it all. As a family owned hotel, making sure you have a great experience is personal. There’s a lot of reasons you might want to visit Auburn—for a weekend getaway, college tours, or a beautiful wedding—but no matter the reason, you should come home to The CoHo.
